I would like to invite you all to a recital in my own home studio where I will perform the complete solo piano works of Arnold Schoenberg, along with his two most famous students, Alban Berg and Anton Webern.
Schoenberg (born in 1874 in Austria to a Jewish family) is one of the most influential composers of Western classical music. His impact on classical and avant-garde composers, performance practice, music theory, film music, and even jazz are immense and often go unacknowledged. 2024 is the 150th anniversary of his birth. Even though classical music culture usually loves capitalizing on composer anniversaries, there are no performances of any of his music currently planned in the Portland metro area at all this year…except for this recital!
My goal is to be a welcoming, insightful, and occasionally irreverent guide into the music of brilliant, fascinating, and unique composer. Schoenberg’s music is complex and challenging to new listeners because he asks us to deal with the Other and to hold empathy for the Other (a lesson still needed for 2024), in part through his anti-tonal harmonic practice of "emancipating the dissonance." His music compels us to move beyond mere inclusion or tolerance and into awareness of the Other—a major reason why audiences struggle with his music. My own experience in performing his music over the years is that audiences, even musically cautious ones, delight in his musical world when given the right kind of invitation into it.
My recital, as of today, is the only concert celebrating Schoenberg in Portland this year. If you are courageous, curious, and would enjoy an exciting trip through challenging artistic experiences, please come join me!
